Most leaves have lighter undersides. Some even have ones that are a completely different color! I often use Tent in floss because that little bit of sheen is realistic. If the canvas shows veins, most of the time you only need to stitch the central vein. Skip over it when you are doing your main stitching and do it as a last step.

When you are laying one leaf next to another you may need to use your fingernail to lift the threads that are already on the canvas aside so you can get your needle in to where it needs to go. Often there will not be enough space at the edge of an area to complete the block, and we then need to use compensating stitches to fill the area available.
